Kniphofia: Red Hot Poker There are 68 species in the genus Kniphofia, all originating in southern and eastern Africa. They form clumps of grass-like finely toothed foliage with strong stems rising above the foliage with flowers that look-like glowing pokers or torches, hence the common name.

For best results, provide a humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil in full sun or part shade.
Sow February to June or September to October on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays. Cover seed with a light sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Keep at a temperature of between 15-20C (59-68F). After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; germination can take 14-30 days.When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3 inch)pots or trays. Gradually acclimatise young plants to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after all risk of frost, 30cm (12 inches)apart.

Red Hot Pokers are flowering perennials that bloom in the summer with torch-shaped, bright, red, yellow and orange flowers. Sometimes called Torch Lilies, Red Hot Poker plants can grow up to 5 feet tall and 3 feet wide, and often used as border or specimen plants. Many varieties of Red Hot Pokers exist, with slightly different but always vibrant flower colors and different blooming times. Some varieties bloom in the late spring and early summer, some in mid-summer, and others in late summer and early autumn. Red Hot Poker plants grow best in USDA zones 5 through 9, where winter temperatures don’t drop below -15 degrees Fahrenheit.
