Company Overview
The Ladbrokes brand has a long history dating back to the late nineteenth century. Originally a small agency that catered for taking horse racing bets from the British aristocracy and high society, they catered to the clientele of many of the elite Gentlemen's Clubs in the St James area of Central London.
Ladbrokes fortunes wavered in the middle of the twentieth century until the advent of legalised betting in the 1960s. The company widened its reach beyond the upper classes and went public, offering its shares for sale on the London Stock Exchange. By 1971 Ladbrokes owned and operated 660 betting shops in the UK.
The 1970s saw Ladbrokes start to move into the Casino market. By 1977 Ladbrokes owned 3 London Casinos that were responsible for around 27% of the British Casino market. Determined to increase their market share even further Chairman Cyril Stein hired Danish Andreas Christensen to head their Marketing Division.
During his time at Ladbrokes Christensen engaged in many illegal practices to market the casinos. Agents would note down the license numbers of expensive cars parked outside rival casinos, Christensen then bribed a corrupt Police Officer to provide name and address details from the Police National Computer. He would then use these details to send gifts, flowers and Champagne to their residences inviting them to come and gamble in Ladbrokes casinos. The scheme was exposed by Private Eye, believed to have obtained their information from one of Ladbrokes key rivals, Playboy. In 1979 the Ladbrokes offices were raided by Police and the renewal of the Casinos licenses was refused. Ladbrokes appealed, but the court heard evidence from the Cyril Steins' personal secretary, Janet Ballard, that revealed she had been ordered to shred all documents relating to the scheme, known as Unit Six.
